If you look carefully enough, you'll find that there are a handful of holidays for every single day of the year. People love to celebrate, and if there are enough folks who feel passionate about something, it will receive its own day. August is no exception, and one of the most surprising things about this month is that it has quite a few food-themed celebrations. August can be a bittersweet month, since it signals the last hurrah of summer. It may be that people want to drown their sorrows in delicious food. This August, when you celebrate the common and uncommon dishes that have received their own festive occasions, put a bit of a twist on each dish to make it your own.
August 2 - National Ice Cream Sandwich Day One of the most delicious American desserts is also one of the simplest. Vanilla ice cream between two chocolate cookies is tasty, but there are ways to spice it up. If you decide to have a party or cookout on August 2, provide plenty of ice cream sandwiches for desert. For a change, provide dipping sauces so that all the guests can sample the sandwiches drizzled in a variety of flavors. Fruit puree, butterscotch, white chocolate sauce and whipped cream are good choices.
August 3 - National Watermelon Day Meeting someone who doesn't like watermelon is a rarity. It's no wonder that this amazing fruit has its own day. However, as much as people love to stuff hunks of melon into their mouths in the summertime, it can get a little tedious. To spice up a watermelon, try soaking pieces of the fruit in alcohol. Wine and brandy give it a sweet tang, though it's important not to eat this watermelon and drive.
August 6 - National Mustard Day Ketchup's little brother finally gets the recognition that he deserves on the 6th of August, and it's about time. Ketchup will always be the star of the American summer condiment family, but mustard is the workhorse. Sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and ham all benefit from his tangy flavor. However, on mustard's special day, spice things up with some spicy mustard. Try mixing some hot sauce into the bottle to give it a little bit of a kick. You could even dice some jalapenos and drop them into the mustard bowl.
August 10 - National S'mores Day A camping staple for generations, people always want s'more. Everyone knows the basics for constructing one, so a little tinkering with the recipe shouldn't be too difficult. For a simple twist, find chocolate graham crackers and use white chocolate chunks. To take it one step further, substitute the chocolate for a peanut butter cup and use a cinnamon graham cracker on the outside.
August 31 - National Trail Mix Day The wonderful thing about this tasty snack is that its definition is fairly loose. Basically, any concoction of nuts and berries can be thrown together with all manner of other ingredients, and trail mix has thus been achieved. Standard trail mix includes raisins, cashews, cranberries, filberts, almonds and walnuts, but the creative party host can serve a trail mix hors d'oeuvre that puts this to shame. Spicy wasabi peas, dried apricots, tiny marshmallows and gummi bears will all leave guests asking for more mix. In fact, any candy will make a fine addition to trail mix.
