Sam Walton, an Arkansan businessman, began his retail career when he started work on June 3, 1940. He was employed by JC Penney at one of their Des Moines, Iowa locations. He was a member of the service team for a year and a half, learning the ins and outs of customer service and how people like to be treated. He also kept his eyes out for sales trends and how store layout can affect what people buy and how much they are willing to spend on what they buy. By the time he met the Butler Brothers in 1945, the whiz kid Sam Walton had learned an awful lot about the inner workings of a retail business. The Butler Brothers were the owners of a regional retail chain that owned many stores under many names. The Butler Brothers offered one of those stores, a Ben Franklin, in a small town in Arkansas. With the chance not only to run his own store, but to be closer to home, Sam Walton jumped at the chance. He was massively successful. He turned all of his working knowledge of retail sales and customer service into a gold mine and realized some his store potential as a retail magnate. Walton was stymied, not by any flaw in his business practices but in the lease agreement of the store. When the lease was up, Walton could neither agree upon a new one for the existing store, nor could he settle on a location of another one. So he closed that store and took over another Ben Franklin in another location (Bentonville Arkansas) and called it Walton’s Five and Dime. (The original Walton’s Five and Dime in Bentonville, Arkansas is still there, operating today as a Wal-Mart Visitor’s Center) Sam Walton found that the secret of his success at the Walton’s Five and Dime was to offer his customers the merchandise at a mark up rate slightly lower than that of his competitors. Knowing that penny pinching customers are always on the look for a deal, he incorporated a deal into every item of his Walton’s Five and Dime by not marking up his merchandise as much as other stores. On July 2, 1962, Sam Walton opened the first Wal-Mart Discount City store in Rogers, Arkansas. He struck gold again as he knew he would. He followed up his huge success by expanding into 24 stores throughout Arkansas and he did it within five years of opening his Rogers, Arkansas store. Sam Walton’s company, growing and successful, reached $12.6 million in sales and in 1968, he expanded his empire beyond the borders of Arkansas, opening stores in Sikeston, Missouri and Claremore, Oklahoma. The opening of these stores turned out to be the first steps toward a global marketplace. Wal-Mart locations began to spring up all over the country, and then the world.
In addition to Wal-Mart Stores U.S. which is the umbrella corporation under which all the other divisions of Wal-Mart lie, which accounts for 67.2% of its net sales. Three of those divisions are Discount Stores, Supercenters, and Neighborhood Markets. The retail department stores are known mostly for their non-grocery items. The discount stores are known for carrying mostly clothes and sundries in addition to a selection of food items. Most of these kinds of stores have a department for gardening, a Wal-Mart pharmacy with on hand druggists, a car care center where a consumer can purchase Wal-Mart tires, optical center, sometimes a photo processing center, a Wal-Mart photo center, a branch of a local bank, a technology center and even a fast food court. Some even offer gas.
The Wal-Mart Supercenters are the newest wave and gaining popularity as the American consumer leans towards one stop shopping to fulfill all of his or her needs. The supercenters stock everything that the discount centers do, but in addition the Supercenters offer a full scale grocery store included meat, poultry, dairy, produce, and fresh seafood. Not only do the Wal-Mart Supercenters offer groceries, most also include pet shops, pharmacies, car care centers, hair and nail salons, video rental stores, and even fast food chains such as McDonald’s and Subway.
The Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market like the photo negative of the Discount store. They are more like grocery stores offering full lines of groceries and sundries, drug store needs, health and beauty products, photo developing services, and a limited selection of general merchandise. The groceries are definitely the bread and butter, so to speak, of the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market. They are used to fill the gap between the Discount Stores and the Supercenters.
Then there’s Sam’s Club. Sam’s club is a warehouse club, which sell groceries and general merchandise in bulk form, offering even steeper discounts for members who have paid their annual dues. Non-members can make purchases either by buying a one day membership or paying a surcharge based on the price of the purchase.
Then there’s Walmart.com. As the internet started to expand into the everyday necessity it is today, Wal-Mart was right there to provide its online customers with the tools they needed to shop from the comfort of their own homes. Hopping online and clicking the All Departments button reveals an alphabetical list of what is available at walmart.com. The customer can choose among the following: Apparel, books, for the home, clearance, baby, electronics, gifts and celebrations, health and beauty, jewelry, grocery, in stores now, movies, music, outdoor living, sports and fitness, video games, pets, photo center, toys, and roll backs. Every year millions of men and women watch the Super Bowl either for the commercials, to root for their favorite team, the half-time performance or an excuse to hang out with friends. On Feburary 5, 2012 two rivals will face each other for the 46th annual Super Bowl - where will you be?
Why not spend the evening with some of your closest friends and host a Super Bowl party of your own? This can prove to be a much more personal and enjoyable experience than heading to a crowded local bar or pub.
While hosting a party for friends can add up quickly, sometimes it's well worth the money spent to have a good time. Chances are snacks and drinks at home will be much cheaper than overpriced beers at the bar or expensive game seats. Furthermore, a Walmart promotion code could help you save money on all the odds and ends needed to throw a successful Super Bowl bash.
Few unofficial holidays can get both men and women equally pumped up, and these occasions need to be celebrated properly. Not to mention that hosting a fun party for your man right before Valentine's day may just work out in your favor.
Commercials like the pug running at the closed glass door might make the three hours of football worth it for women. The halftime show also tends to be favored by the female audience. World class entertainer, Madonna, will be performing for the 2012 Super Bowl. Men can gawk at the colliding helmets while women dance to the musings of the Material Girl.
One of the great things about holidays unofficial or official is the food. Thanksgiving has the turkey, Christmas has the ham and Superbowl Sunday has a little bit of everything. Keep the cost of hosting a party down by suggesting a potluck. Friends and family can bring their favorite dishes to share for the event. To be sure that every guest doesn't show up with chicken wings, ask guests to sign up for a certain dish before the party.
Chances are the male party guests will be more worried about the game than the decor, but women typically appreciate a little extra. Since half of your guests probably won't care about the extra steps you've taken to make the party special, keep the decorations simple and inexpensive. Craft Super Bowl centerpieces with team names or football designs. The fact is, most guests will be vying for the food, but a simple centerpiece can go a long way.
While the final teams have yet to be determined for the big game, chances are a few of your guests will harbor different opinions on who deserves the big "W." Suggest that your guests wear the attire of their favored team and really play up the competitive nature of the occasion - after all, a little competition helps the world go 'round. Guests could stand on separate sides of the room with pom poms or posters to really get into the spirit of the day.
Last but certainly not least, what's one thing that men and women love equally about football? If your answer is tailgating, then you got it right! The camaraderie and atmosphere that tailgating creates is difficult to duplicate. Grilling burgers and playing games of pick-up football are nearly impossible to do in a small living space. Try hosting a tailgate of your own with neighbors and friends outdoors. Just because you're not at the game doesn't mean you can't have a great time.
Winter is creeping up on us, which means that it's about time you started to get prepared. If your area gets a ton of snow each winter, it's important to have the right tools to clear it out of the way. A couple of sturdy shovels will make clearing off your porch, walkways and decks easy, while a snow blower can handle the more expansive driveway area. You won't have to break your back shoveling for hours on end and your driveway will look a lot neater without those huge piles of snow. It may also help to stock up on some salt to get rid of the ice that could form and make walking around outside difficult.
Winterizing your vehicle is important because it can keep you safe when conditions get tricky. Invest in a good ice scraper to keep in all of your vehicles to make sure that the windows will always be clear. Snow tires are also helpful, as they can grip the road better when it's icy and full of snow. You can also stock up on antifreeze, oil and winter windshield washing fluid so you don't experience any weather-related issues on the road.
Of course, your family is going to need plenty of outdoor wear to stay comfortable and warm in the freezing temperatures. A good coat for each member of the family is essential, as are hats, scarves and mittens or gloves. A Walmart promotion code can get you deals on all of these items, so price doesn't have to cramp your style. A good pair of boots is also essential, especially if you'll be hanging around outside.
You can be totally prepared this winter by stocking up on all the essentials for auto care, snow removal and outdoor fashion for your family. A Walmart promotion code can even get you savings on grocery items, so you don't have to pay a fortune to cook those special holiday meals!
