About Groupon

Groupon, a play on the words "group" and "coupon", is a subscription-based service offering members specially-discounted value offers for local businesses in their geographic area. As such, Groupon has become a household name in the U.S. and throughout Europe, Asia and South America.

The company was founded in 2008 in Chicago and quickly expanded to other major cities and in 2 years had over 35 million members. Within 5 years, that number had jumped to over 48 million users. Groupon went public in November of 2011. The company has grown organically and through acquisitions, especially overseas. The most notable acquisition was that of its chief competitor, LivingSocial, in late 2016.

Over the years, Groupon has evolved from offering one deal per day (ie a "Groupon"). Their business model includes retaining approximately 50% of the cost the customer pays for the Groupon.

Competitive products have sprung up, including Google Offers and others, many of which have closed down.
