The 2011 Imagine Cup competition, held this year in Redmond, Washington, was a contest not just to see how far technology has advanced, but to applaud technology that is socially and environmentally beneficial.
Sponsored by Microsoft and held at the company's headquarters, the Imagine Cup accepts submissions from around the country in a number of different categories, the only criteria being that entrants create something which makes meaningful improvements to the world.
This year, Team Big Impact Bear of the University of Houston took first place with their mobile phone app "Forest Gun." The game allows players to make real-world changes that will help end deforestation.
Team Bloom from Tribeca, New York won the console game category. They were the developers of "Spero," which lets users create solutions to energy problems and create alternative sources of power.
The first place award in the computer software division went to Team Note-Taker, who designed technology that allows the near-blind to write and take notes with greater ease.
