Those with daily morning traffic woes can breathe a sigh of relief. Google recently updated its Google Maps Navigation Android app, allowing you the option to steer clear of rush hour traffic on your way to work.

Before the change, GMN showed its users the areas of heavy congestion in red and gave different options as alternatives. Roy Williams, software engineer for the app, explained in a blog post that the update on Google Maps can automatically route users around traffic. The change on the program applies knowledge on "current and historical traffic to select the fastest route from those alternates," Williams said.

The change to the software, according to Williams, can hopefully save drivers who have the app on their Android smartphones some time and fuel. Speaking on behalf of the whole Google Maps team, he also said that there is no guarantee that GMN will be able to find a faster way, so drivers should still use their best judgment.
