Volkswagen is hoping that the new redesign of the Beetle for 2012 will be a hit - not only for females, but also for men around the world.

VW U.S. chief Jonathan Browning explained to USA Today that the previous model "ha[d] a very large contingent of female buyers. We want to keep those buyers and expand to (more) male buyers."

Besides a new focus in its target demographic, the modernized iconic vehicle that was recently unveiled at the Shanghai auto show in China is also being positioned by the company to sell in global markets beyond the U.S. in countries like China, Mexico and most of Europe.

The automaker mentioned that the car will come to the U.S. in September or October but did not provide pricing at the New York unveiling, according to the news source. The company did, however, mention that the new model would stay true to what the original Beetle stood for, as it will "remain affordable to a large portion of the population."
