Web-enabled television sales projected to increase
Sales of TV's with internet access have been on the rise, so much so that they are expected to account for one-fifth of all devices by 2014.
DisplaySearch, a market research firm specializing in digital technology, reports that in three years, the number of web-enabled televisions will reach 123 million. A web-enabled television isn't just a TV that can stream content through a device or service. The industry standard for this kind of machine is defined by a number of factors.
These TVs must have an open browsing function, meaning that they can be directed to any website. They also must be capable of upgrading their software and possess an advanced user interface. Additionally, web-enabled televisions can be updated with different operating systems and communicate with other home devices like computers and smartphones.
While North America accounts for some of the recent growth in this industry, the early leader is Japan. In the coming years, Western Europe and China are expected to be major contributors to the figure of 123 million. DisplaySearch estimates that 12 percent of all televisions sold in China in 2010 were able to access the Internet.
