The summer is an excellent time to get outside and entertain guests. Most people don't need an excuse to throw a big party or have a few people over for snacks and drinks, but sometimes it's nice to have a little bit of a pretense for the summer festivities that everyone looks forward to. Besides the major summer holidays such as Independence Day and Labor Day, there are dozens of strange and bizarre celebrations scattered all over the calendar. Here is a list of wacky events that can give your next party a little bit more color and character.
June 17 - National Flip-Flop Day For some people, summertime means an opportunity to wear sandals as often as possible. If you're one of those folks (or you know a lot of people who are), this is an excellent reason to invite people over to spend time in the backyard, enjoying the feel of the grass beneath their flip-flops. You can even purchase cheap and comfortable sandals for those guests who don't have any and keep them in a bin by the door.
June 19 - World Sauntering Day This celebration will lend itself to relaxation and a laid-back attitude. Perfect for summer, sauntering is something that everyone can enjoy with a beverage in one hand and some barbecued food in the other. Saunter over to a search engine and look for a Kmart Promotional Code (KM2011) to stock up on supplies for a party that will need plenty of plastic cups, snack foods and outdoor chairs.
June 21 - National Daylight Appreciation Day This day is the summer solstice, which is naturally the longest day of the year. Lovers of the sun and summertime can come together and enjoy an outdoor feast much like the prehistoric Druids would at the famous site Stonehenge. Of course, your guests might not have an ancient set of massive stone pillars through which to view the setting sun. However, the trees, smoke from the grill and good company are all they'll need to remember their most recent summer solstice.
June 25 - The Great American Backyard Camp Out Much of the appeal in camping derives from the fact that people get to be far away from it all, roughing it and living a little bit more off of the land. Imagine having all that fun without having to remove oneself to the wilderness! Support a vigorous lifestyle while enjoying all the amenities of home by throwing a backyard camping party. The guests can stay late in the comfort of your yard, and unless you live deep in the woods, there's no need to worry about bears.
