About Amazon
Amazon was founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos and is the largest online retailer in the United States and the most valuable retailer in the country, surpassing Walmart in 2015. With headquarters in Seattle, Washington, Amazon.com offers consumers online access to new retail products and an enormous selection of used products through partner providers. Originally developed as book seller, Amazon has grown exponentially and now is the major online source for electronics (television and video, home audio and theater, camera and photo, cell phones and services, video games, Mp3 and media players, car electronics, home appliances’ and musical instruments), household goods (kitchen and dining, furniture and décor, bedding and bath, home appliances, vacuums and storage, home improvement, patio, lawn and garden, pet supplies, and sewing, craft and hobby), grocery (natural and organic, gourmet food, health and personal care, and beauty), toys and games (for baby, kids, video games, software) apparel (clothing, shoes, jewelry, and watches), sports and outdoor (exercise and fitness, outdoor recreation, action sports, team sports, cycling, golf, fan gear) and tools (power and hand tools, home improvement, outdoor power equipment, automotive, motorcycle and ATV, industrial and scientific).
Amazon was named for the South American river. What started out as a simple idea, “How can I harness the power of the newly born but wildly growing Internet to sell a product?” turned into a billion dollar question. Bezos chose books as his product as there was no mail order catalogue for a universal source of publications. Bezos put two and two together and came up with the idea for an online warehouse of books that could be easily accessed by the consumer via the growing power of the World Wide Web. He learned all he could about the book business in general, and leaning on his already substantial working knowledge of computer science, coding, and language in combination with his expertise in the stock market and its fluctuation activities, Bezos set up shop in his two bedroom Seattle house. Bezos has always relied on his friends and family to help with the workload. The beginning was no exception. He asked 300 of his nearest and dearest to help test the prototype system. It was an almost instant success. Within 30 days of being open for online business, without advertising and relying solely on word of mouth press, Amazon had conducted business in all fifty states and in forty-five countries world wide.
In addition to being one of the kings of the online warehouses, complete with a vast array of Amazon coupons, Amazon also features many programs for business. There are ways to buy and sell personal products with Amazon, there are ways to produce professional quality publications on the consumers’ own timetable and with minimal upfront commitment on the part of the consumer. A consumer interested in having Amazon’s help in managing their websites is in luck! Amazon features just such a thing. There are also links to educate the consumer in ways to advertise with Amazon.
There are two separate programs designed to help users sell their "stuff" online. The Sell on Amazon program allows sellers to reach millions of potential buyers at once, without suffering the penalty of a per-product fee. For the beginner, Amazon features a more basic program. For those sellers with just a few things to unload Amazon provides the Sell Your Stuff here program. The benefit of this program is that there is no cost to the seller until the products are actually sold.
A burgeoning part of the Amazon ecosystem, Amazon Web Services, has become an invaluable tool for businesses of all sizes looking for big help in the management of their websites in the cloud. Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, and Amazon SQS are services that allow for the cutting of fixed costs and the building and maintenance of the consumer’s web-based infrastructure. Amazon helps keep costs down, while maximizing and developing web applications for the consumer. There is even a Webstore by Amazon feature which allows the consumer to tap into the power of the Amazon technology in order to back their own branded online store. Credit card processing as well as Fraud Protection are also included.
Amazon has continued to innovate. In 2017 the company purchased Whole Foods and opened its first Amazon Go store in Seattle, which eliminates checkout lines for customers. Additionally the company is rapidly expanding into India and other markets.
