Father's Day 2013--Some History and a Few Ideas

Father’s Day 2013 falls on Sunday, June 16th. There is the old story of the child that demands half of his old man’s Father’s Day gift because “if it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t be a father”. As we age and better understand the essential place most fathers play in the lives of their children, we want to honor them on this one day of the year set aside to recognize their special place in our lives. Traditionally, Father’s day is celebrated around the world on the third Sunday of June. The celebration is generally viewed to have begun in Spokane, Washington, the brainchild of Sonora Dodd, whose father had raised six children after losing his wife. After some fits and starts, several retailer groups backed congressional action to recognize the day. This led to several presidential proclamations before it was finally recognized as a national holiday after congressional action signed by Richard Nixon in 1972. The holiday is now celebrated around the world on different days and in different ways. As with Mother’s Day, Father’s Day has become a prime target of retailers looking for an excuse to sell gifts.
