GoodFellas Starring Ray Liotta, Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci, 1990's GoodFellas details the life of Henry Hill (Liotta), a member of the Lucchese crime family between 1955 and 1980. The story was inspired by Nicholas Pileggi's Wiseguy, a nonfiction account of the real life mobster Henry Hill. The story follows Hill from his childhood in Brooklyn and into his later life as he rises through the ranks of the Mafia and becomes involved with the drug trade. Hill is flanked by his two friends Jimmy Conway (DeNiro) and Tommy DeVito (Pesci) as they plot a variety of small time scams and major heists. The movie also pays particular attention to Hill's wife, Karen, and their marriage forms the central plot, as the two struggle through the ups and downs of living in a crime family.

GoodFellas was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, however only Joe Pesci won for Best Supporting Actor. GoodFellas is considered to be a Mafia movie classic, among the ranks of the Godfather and the Godfather: Part II.

The Departed Focusing on the Irish mob in South Boston, 2006's The Departed was inspired by the 2002 Hong Kong film, Infernal Affairs. The movie features an ensemble cast comprised of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen. The film won several Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.

The Departed follows mob boss Frank Costello (Nicholson) and his close associate Colin Sullivan (Damon), whom Costello hires to infiltrate the Massachusetts State Police. Meanwhile, a young cadet named Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) is given a special assignment to go undercover in Costello's crime outfit. As the two double agents work their way further into their guises, lines begin to blur surrounding their true identities and they become involved in a game of cat and mouse to root the other out.
