Quicker Picker: How To Make Saving Simple And Second Nature
Filed Under: Personal Finance
Saving money, for most, takes work, practice and attention to detail.
Not to mention patience and a penchant for walking away from spending money, which incidentally is quite enjoyable.
That doesn’t mean that money and simplicity can’t go hand in hand.
There are, in fact, plenty of ways to earn money and be able to save a little here and there, which adds up significantly. The truth is the biggest reason why those who save money can do so isn’t predicated on some grandiose income but instead smart, budget decisions they make that are small but end up saving money tenfold over time.
And this isn’t a “get rich quick” or “windfall on money” type discussion but rather choices that can be made cognitively and at the moment that end up putting money where in belongs: in your bank account.
One tip anyone who has been able to win the financial battle will tell you is that they’re always taking personal inventory, both of physical goods and also budgeting matters. They’ll continually shop for better interest rates on just about everything or look for lower, more competitive pricing for certain services as well (i.e. car insurance, cable, etc.)
In addition to the budgeting aspect of it, they’ll always go through things they don’t need and get rid of them, whether it’s selling it online, bringing it to a vendor or retailer who will buy it or simply holding a mom and pop garage sale when the weather allows for it.
And some may argue that if you spent $20 on a DVD and you’re selling it for $5 that is money lost, and technically that’s true. The flip side of that is the $20 is already spent and if you can get any dollar amount for something that is collecting dust in your attic, then why wouldn’t you go down that route.
Another source of missed saving money opportunity comes in the form of bank fees or other charges that you continually spend on and see zero benefits. This could be anything from a gym membership you don’t use (let’s face it if you’re not using it now, you probably aren’t going to) or belonging to other subscription services such as streaming entertainment, for instance. Bank fees, such as overdraft charges or having to pay to have an account, is ridiculous given two factors: competition and technology. Banks will offer you free checking accounts and the ability to protect things such as over drafting or ATM fees.
Saving money isn’t the brain teaser some make it out to be, especially when you consider just how easy it can be when you look a little past the surface of saving in traditional ways.
