If you're a college student, chances are you don't have a ton of cash to blow on a plane ticket to travel home this holiday season. There's nothing as sad and lonely as having to forfeit your trip home because of cash, so start planning early to get the best deals on travel this season. An STA Travel promotion code can get you discounts on Student Exclusive tickets, while the following tips can help you figure out the best time to book your flights.

Shop around early According to FareCompare.com, you shouldn't rely on last-minute deals this year. Travel demands have remained steady all year round, and the holiday season is only expected to increase the amount of people flying. Airlines have started to raise their prices in response, so the longer you wait to book your flight, the more likely it is that you'll have to pay more.

Cheap dates to look for If you book on a certain date when not that many people will be traveling, you should be able to find better deals. Flying home on Thanksgiving day itself could be a good idea if you're okay with it, and you could also get lucky on the Monday before. Plan on leaving the Friday, Saturday or Tuesday after, and you may have yourself a cheap Thanksgiving vacation. As for Christmas, you could fly in on the 25th if you're okay with missing Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, otherwise leave before December 17 and after January 2.

More ways to save You may want to consider following your favorite airlines on sites like Facebook and Twitter so you can be updated on their promotions, otherwise use comparison sites to shop for flights. Be sure to avoid extra baggage fees by limiting your luggage to a carry-on, and don't hesitate to look for flights that have stops. They're not as convenient, but they're often less expensive.
