Tired of spending money after a long holiday season? It’s tough out there, and you’re only human! Even so, try to fight the credit card fatigue because you won’t want to miss out on all the different deals January is sure to bring. Post-holiday spending can be one of the smartest ways to prepare yourself for 2017.

Long weekends always equate to huge opportunities for sales and savings. Even though Martin Luther King Jr.’ Day is considered a day of service, you should anticipate retailers to take full advantage of the extra time consumers will have to come into their stores to shop.

Once you’ve got your new years resolutions outlined, consider what you’ll need to make them stick. January can be one of the best times of the year to make purchases because many retailers have leftover inventory after stocking up for the holiday rush. Prices will come down to clear the shelves!

As we approach MLK weekend, keep an eye out for storewide (and site-wide) sales on the items that will help you accomplish more this coming year. Let our research inspire you!

New Cars

Looking at trends from years past, if you're in the market for a new car, you may consider signing that dotted line this month. Automobile sales tend to drop after the new year and for a good reason.

As a rule, most people don't want to drive their brand new car through all the snow and salty roads with their wet and muddy shoes right out of the dealership.

Many places hold on to older models through the holiday season only to drop the prices when they don't sell (the same can be said about big appliance retailers). You'll have the best chances of negotiating a deal that works for you after the holiday rush dies down. Dealerships want to clear their lots as soon as possible for the up and coming models, especially in time for their annual Spring promotions! If a new car is on your 2017 to do list, start the search now.

Gift Cards

using a gift card />
Gift cards have become one of the most popular presents out there for just about every special occasion you can think of. After all, it's hard to find a person who doesn't want free money! The problems arise when the money is store or service specific. Receiving a gift card is no fun if it is for a product you'll never want or use.

January is the time to hop online and search for gift cards to stores and services you can't live without. The phrase 'one man's trash is another man's treasure' couldn't be truer in this instance. There are several websites out there designed to help people sell the gift cards they don't want. They incentivize their sales by pricing them for less than they are worth, especially after the holidays when the sites are flooded with so many listings. Don't miss a great chance to save!

Renovations
<img src=

January could be a great month to start your renovations. When people imagine remodeling their homes, they often visualize the project being complete in time for the holidays, not after.

They also believe the Summer, Fall or early Winter as optimal times to face the invasive construction disruptions. Depending on the scale of the needed construction you may be able to snag lower rates from your contractors because the demand for them will have decreased post-holidays.

Keep in mind; good weather will surely be a necessity for bigger projects. The threat of snow and cold conditions very well may be a good reason to avoid a winter start. For small to medium remodels that wouldn't require exposure to the elements, you may be in luck. If you've been putting off a project because the quotes you've received have been too high, January is a very good time to try again! At the very least there's a much bigger chance they'll answer your calls!

Organizational Tools & Storage

Retailers take full advantage of the fact that new years resolutions are a thing. The discounts you see popping up all through January and February cater to the recurring promises people make to themselves each year.

Calendars, for example, are always priced high leading up to Christmas. Wait a month or so, and the price drops considerably. Same can be said for storage bins, shelving units and other large furniture.

Apply for a new Credit Card

After spending so much money on gifts this past holiday season it would appear to be counter-intuitive to apply for a new credit card right? Wrong.

to woo the "lower my debt" resolution-ers, many large credit card companies run promotions that are worth taking advantage of. Bonus miles, increased cash back programs and lower interest rates may make the transfer of your debt from one card to another a very smart move.

Airfare/Travel

Once New Years has come and gone, it's safe to say January is a great time to plan a big trip. MLK weekend may give you a little bit of a price bump, but as a rule, airfare gets pretty cheap early in the year. Tourism, as a rule, takes a dip because so many students and families have just completed visits and trips for the Holidays.

If you pick an "off-season" destination, you'll save even more on lower hotel rates and car rentals. Give yourself a break this year and plan a nice vacation for a change!

TVs

The Super Bowl is right around the corner and with that will come many viewing parties! All of a sudden the ten-year-old TV in your living room just doesn't cut it anymore, right? Retailers know this and historically host sales on their electronics accordingly. It is, after all- a great way to get more people into their stores to buy their leftover inventory.

Keep an eye on favorite stores that carry your dream TV and watch the prices start to fall as the month goes on. MLK weekend especially may feature some special deals on all things electronics!

Christmas/Winter Decor

Christmas Decor

You know you see the sales every year but never act on them. Come December you find yourself unhappy with your selection of holiday decorations but (rightfully so) refuse to pay top dollar. Imagine if you read an article that inspired you to go out and take advantage of the discounts this year?

As soon as the New Year hits, the aisles will be spilling over with the same festive decor you missed out on this past holiday season. Next time you come across such an opportunity, save yourself a few bucks and pick up those lights, artificial trees, and snowman figures. You'll be glad you did next Winter!
