Many of the unlikeliest nations you wouldn't think of are at the top of the fast web connection list, according to The Atlantic.
Despite the crucial role that the U.S. has played in the creation and refinement of the world wide web, Americans can only boast the 30th-fastest average internet connection.
The prize for fastest overall connectivity is no surprise: South Korea. Known for their advanced technology and love of video games, South Koreans live in one of the most net-connected places on Earth. Those countries filling out the top ten 10 are somewhat more surprising: Lithuania, Latvia, Andorra and the Aland Islands.
Sweden, Romania, Moldova and the Netherlands are also among the fastest, and coming in at number 10 is, of course, Japan.
Why does the U.S. lag so far behind other smaller nations? One reason is the huge proportion of the population (estimated at one third) which has no access to broadband internet connections, the news source reports. Unlike other parts of the world, if Americans don't use the internet at home, they aren't likely to use it at internet cafes or elsewhere. Additionally, the use of dial-up web connections has all but disappeared in the past five years.
