About Eastbay

Eastbay is a leading world supplier of athletic footwear, apparel and sports equipment. It was established to meet the performance needs of local high school and college athletes in Wisconsin. Founded in 1980, Eastbay was essentially designed as a company on the road. Two men (no further information is available on the founders of the company at this time) took their inventory of about $7000 worth of shoes and took the road around their hometown of Wasau, WI. They set up shop at stops along the way, using their unique selling talents and their love for the shoes they were selling to showcase the benefits of their product. The shoes were designed to enhance the quality of the output of the athlete and in the inherent design and building of the shoe, the athlete would find unprecedented support and and a feel that highlighted the personal abilities of the athlete. The shoes would meet and exceed the needs of local high school and college performers, but would become so popular due to the truth in advertising these two men promised that it would eventually lead the two into bigger and better business opportunities. But for the time being, they were selling their wares on the road around their hometown. But having a product that spoke for itself as well as having provided a descriptive price list, the two business partners started to find success on the road.

In 1983, our shoe partners developed a catalog for track and field and baseball shoes and cleats. The introduction of the mail order catalog increased sales in a way that was unprecedented to the company before this. 1988 saw the hiring of phone operators to ease the volume of calls the catalog brought in. The boys at Eastbay founded a Team Sales division in the spring of 89 and in 1990 created and produced its first in-house Team Sales catalog. The company continued to grow. It added departments and employees and merchandise until soon, the Shipping and Creative Departments, the ones that handled the ordering and the mailing of the merchandise as well the department allocated the generating of new ideas and merchandise took up an entire city block in order to fulfill the needs of the company. In 1990, Eastbay branched out into the establishment of its own clothing line. The Eastbay logo sat high and proud on a number of items including, but not limited to jackets, pants, shorts, and tops in a variety of team colors and styles. 1995 brought about some major changes for the little company that could. They went public, opening on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange. Two years later, shareholders decided to up their ante and sold the company to the retail conglomerate, Woolworth. Late summer 1997, Eastbay moved its downtown headquarters and corporate offices as well as its main retail store to a larger location in Wausau’s near west side. Three months later, that new location solved the company’s need for a distribution center by combining warehouses into a mammoth location right on the outskirts of town. In 1998, what started out as an information only website was given a massive facelift and eastbay.com was born. In order to keep with new competitors like FootLocker, Finish Line, Final Score, and Champs, Eastbay tapped into the online market. This move proved to be a super smart one. Sales one again increased at an incredibly fast rate. In order to manage such a tremendous increase in sales, to additional Call Centers were built and established in the towns of Oshkosh and Greenbay. The original era of Eastbay came to a quiet end when our two friends retired from the business in 1999, however the legacy they had built oh so many years ago remained steadfast and true, for the good and solid business decisions they had made had proved to be a rock hard foundation and the castle they built stood and thrived. Woolworth, Easybay’s parent company, also underwent revision in 2001 and changed its name to Foot Locker Inc a reflection of its global commitment to customer service.
