About Gap

Gap is one of the world's largest specialty retailers. They operate four of the most recognized apparel brands in the world — Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy, and Piperlime. The very first Gap store was opened in 1969 in a little town called San Francisco. Donald Fisher sold his wares (said to be Levi’s jeans and collection of music) in his Ocean Avenue store for a year before he realized that the bread and butter were the clothes and not the tapes or records. The audio supplies were pulled from the shelves and the Gap as we know it today took shape. Many of the items of clothing in the Gap line feature the year 1969 has an homage to the birth year of the company. Fisher opened the second store in San Jose, California a year later. With their corporate headquarters planted firmly in Burlingame, California, the Gap expanded beyond the sunny coast. 1976 brought big bucks to the Gap name when the company went public on the New York and Pacific stock exchanges.

Their goal is to make it easy for you to express your personal style throughout your life. Across the company and embedded in their culture are key values that guide their success: integrity, respect, open-mindedness, quality and balance. From a design concept born in New York by their product designers, to an in-store display in one of more than 3,100 stores around the world, each Gap, Banana Republic, Piperlime, and Old Navy product goes through a multi-stage process before reaching the customer. This process ensures that the final product blends the most in-demand essentials that today’s consumers seek. From their seasonal commercials to innovative online sales efforts, Gap, and its subsidiary brands, has always been at the forefront of new fashion trends. Providing attractive clothing at an affordable price has helped them develop a worldwide following. By branching out with their purchases of Banana Republic and the development of Forth and Towne, the Gap stood to fill as many niches of personal taste as possible. Far from becoming a stagnating company, Gap continues to expand its sphere of influence, branching out into babies clothing, children’s wear, and clothing designed for athletes. While it provides a variety of clothing options, it also has available a number of different accessories that blend perfectly with existing design choices.

Piperlime provides handbags for girls and all different varieties of shoes for men or women that allow you to mix and match styles while eventually creating your own perfect fashion combination. Piperlime is home to over 200 different brands of shoes, making it the perfect shop for anyone with feet. Some of the brands included in their giant catalogue are: Kenneth Cole, Nine West, Crocs (God help us) Converse, Steve Madden, Donald J Pliner, and Frye, just to name a very few. Piperlime completed the accessory family when it added handbags in spring of 2008.

Old Navy was originally designed as a warehouse for the Gap, a place to store all the clothes that were either unsold or no longer in season. They were then sold at a great discount to the consumer. The popularity of the store spoke for itself. Old Navy was branded in 1994 and is said to be named after a bar in Paris. Old Navy panders to the price conscious teen and adult who wants to stay abreast of the popular fashions without breaking the bank. IN addition to the clothing line, Old Navy also features jewelry, shoes, handbags, and clothes for dogs.

Banana Republic was originally a safari and travel themed clothing store developed by husband and wife team Mel and Patricia Zegler in 1978. When Gap bought it in 1983, it focused on catalogue sales, as there was a niche in the market to fill. The catalogue reached over a million people that year and 50% of the sales for that store were due to catalogue sales. In 1988, the travel and safari themed catalogues were discontinued and the lifestyle rebranding of Banana Republic began. The changes began the shift to the upscale, classic, tailored look it is known for today. 1993, Gap Inc branched Banana Republic even further to include jewelry, shoes, and personal care lines.

Recently purchased by Gap Inc, Athleta is line of activewear designed for women athletes and women who embrace an active lifestyle. Runners, walkers, cyclists, triathletes, swimmers, and outdoor women enjoy a wide variety of clothing that fits their lifestyle. The range of clothing includes swimwear, camis, tank tops, jackets, vests, sweaters, pants, tights, capris, dresses, skirts, shorts, skorts, footwear, accessories, and bras, underwear and pajamas.

The now defunct Forth and Towne was designed to target older women, specifically the woman who grew up with the Gap, but whose style had wandered. It was intended to bring back the older customer now that her tastes had changed. It was a failure.

Anyone who frequents this store knows the great deals that one can get from being a GAPcard member. The loyalty of Gap shoppers is legendary in the industry and is a feature of pride for the company. Their popularity has only further increased as news of their environmentally friendly manufacturing process has become public knowledge.
