A new study reveals that the benefits of eating mass-produced insect meat might be hard to ignore in the future.
The research done at Wageningen University in the Netherlands indicates that if carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere become too high, replacing livestock like pigs and cows with locusts or crickets would substantially reduce CO2 output. For every kilogram of cattle produced, 2,850 grams of CO2 are released into the atmosphere. Only 17.72 grams would be added if the same amount of locust were generated.
Does the thought of eating bugs sound disgusting? Well, many Asian cultures include insects on their menus, and with good reason: they're incredibly good for you! When it comes to protein, bugs provide twice as much as meat or fish. And they lack saturated fat, with a healthy amount of unsaturated fat to boot.
Considering the likelihood that meat production is expected to double in the next 10 years, our stomachs might have to be flexible if we want to keep eating properly.
