Lowell “Bud” Paxton and Roy Speer began the Home Shopping Club in 1982 as a local cable channel seen on Vision Cable and Group W Cable in a small town in Florida. The partners expanded their business into the first national shopping network three years later and were the first of their kind to allow the customer to view and shop for items from their very own living rooms. The whole thing started when a radio station, which was managed by Paxton was paid by an advertiser in can openers as they were unable to liquidate the merchandise on their own. The radio station was left with the task of selling the items to regain their money. On air personality Bob Circosta took the wares to the airwaves and sold the can openers for $9.95. The venture was a huge success and an industry was born. Circosta became the very first of the HSN hosts and would eventually be responsible for the selling of thousands of different products in over 20,000 hours of on air live television.
Having already firmly planted itself as the only way to shop from the comfort of the customers own home, HSN’s transition to the online community was natural and easy. HSN.com was launched in 1999 and as of 2009 was one of the most heavily trafficked e-commerce sites. Turning to a younger audience as well, HSN.com formed webpages on both MySpace and Facebook and with a web series called Faces of Beautiful You, targeted teens and show how many of the “problems” of a teenage life could be fixed or solved with HSN’s beauty products.
