About Kmart

As of January 2006, Kmart operated a total of 1,416 Kmart stores. Most Kmart stores are one-floor, free-standing units that carry a wide assortment of general merchandise, including products sold under such well-known labels as Jaclyn Smith, Joe Boxer, and Martha Stewart Everyday.  Kmart is a chain of discount department stores with locations in the United States, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Guam.  While Kmart also exists in Australia and New Zealand, it is not affiliated with the Kmart of the United States and partners. 

Kmart was founded in 1962 in Garden City, Michigan by Sebastian S. Kresge, the owner of a five and dime store.  Taking the name of his store from his own name, the original store is still in operation to this very day.  Mr. Kresge was almost instantly successful.  Within the very first year, Kmart had expanded its stores to eighteen locations. During the 1970's, Kmart's growth was taking over its competitors business by leaps and bounds.  It grew and grew into the conglomerate it is today.
