About Sears

Sears, Roebuck and Co. is a leading broadline retailer providing merchandise and related services. Since its early founding in the city of Chicago, Sears, Roebuck and Co. has catered to a wide audience. Sears was founded by a man named Richard Sears. Mr. Sears, a railroad agent at the time, got his start in retail reselling unwanted watches in the stations of the local railroad. Soon, he found that a mail order catalogue was the most efficient way to reach large numbers of consumers who were interested in his watches. He partnered with Alvah Roebuck in Chicago, IL and formed the corporate business of Sears, Roebuck and Co. Mr. Sears and Mr. Roebuck found a niche in the market for local farmers. Forced to purchase their supplies from local general stores, farmers were at the mercy of the store owner and whatever price he chose to quote at the time. There was no consistency and no recourse for the farmer except to accept or do without his supplies. Mr. Sears and Mr. Roebuck filled the need for fair and clear pricing with their experience in mail order catalogues. Consumers could look up the price of any supply in the catalogue where it was neatly printed and clearly stated. It also took the burden off the farmer to come to the store to do his shopping. He could simply order it from Sears, Roebuck, and Co. Within 10 years, the catalogue had grown to over 300 pages, with listings of items for sale such as sewing machines, bicycles, sporting goods, and even automobiles. In 1895, Julius Rosenwald became a part owner, bring in his expertise in organization and efficiency. Although Mr. Roebuck resigned shortly thereafter following a bout with illness, his name remained on the company. Five years later, the company, known for quality products and customer satisfaction, saw its catalogue top the 500 page mark. People were happy to spend their money on Sears and Roebuck goods. The "Consumers' Bible" also came to be known as the "The Wish Book" around the holidays. Although it began its corporate life as a mail order catalogue, the company has stayed competitive throughout the last 140 years by capitalizing on new technologies, including the internet. At sears.com, the consumer can shop for appliances, automotive items and tires, items for Baby, Beauty, Books, Clothing, Electronics and Computers, Music, movies, and video games, Bed Bath and Beyondery, Gifts, Health and Wellness, Home Services, Jewelry and Watches, Lawn and Garden, Office Products, Outdoor Living, Shoes, Tools, Toys and Games. People from all walks of life have come to recognize that the Sears brand name stands for quality and reliability over the long haul. Sears, Roebuck and Co. offers its wide range of home merchandise, apparel, automotive products, and services through more than 2,400 Sears-branded and affiliated stores in the United States and Canada, which includes approximately 926 full-line and 1,100 specialty stores in the U.S. A mainstay of nearly every mall throughout America, Sears has a reputation that allows it to anchor newly opened shopping centers. Their affordable prices on a number of different goods allows the company to keep customers coming back year after year. Sears, Roebuck, and Co. also offers a variety of merchandise and services through sears.com, landsend.com, and specialty catalogs. Sears, Roebuck offers consumers leading proprietary brands such as Kenmore and Craftsman, automotive brands like DieHard, tools like DeWalt, Gladiator, SK, Bosch Tools, Milwaukee, Armstrong, Ingersoll-Rand, and Lands' End -- among the most trusted and preferred brands in the U.S. With its constant acquisition of companies, Sears remains at the forefront of the retail field. The "Come see the softer side of Sears" campaign did more for reaching across the gender aisles than any other campaign of its kind. Now women needn't dread a trip to Sears in which she may very well lose her husband for the afternoon, not to mention the hundreds of dollars he would no doubt spend in the Power Tool section. Now women had their own place in the store and merchandise aimed at them for their own purchases. She could spend her money shopping for clothes (some of the labels listed on sears.com include: Apostrophe, Canyon River Blues, Classic Elements, Covington, Fred David, Harve Bernard, Jordache Premium, Lands' End, Levi's, Sag Harbor, US Polo Association, and Wrangler, just to name a few.) It is the parent company of Kmart and its signature Martha Stewart collection. One of the most popular home décor series available, the status of Stewart has helped generate considerable prestige for Kmart and other Sears subsidiaries. The company is the nation's largest provider of home services, with more than 13 million service calls made annually. With a reputation for knowledgeable technicians, Sears provides service on products beyond those that it sells in its stores. Many Sears locations not only provide consumer goods, but also other services useful to its customers. For example, a consumer could look online to schedule an in-home repair, an in-home design consultation, a cleaning appointment, or to find installation services. Over half of their stores have photography studios and dental centers. At the same time, a smaller number of locations have optical departments. Sears, Roebuck and Co. remains one of the original department stores, with its focus on catering to all the needs of its customers that has survived the changes of a developing world while still maintaining a reputation of quality and class.
