About JCPenney

JCPenney's is one of America's largest retailers offering apparel and home furnishings in store, online, and via catalog. The building of an empire takes vision, determination, and a ruthless drive to see that vision come to fruition. The most successful of empires are built by the visionaries that not only know what they want, but that have either the means to make it happen or the wherewithal to secure those means. James Cash Penney was such a visionary. James Cash Penney was born on a mid September night in 1875. When he graduated from high school in Hamilton, Missouri, J.C Penney found employment with a local dry goods store. After a doctor told him that he needed to relocate due to health concerns, J.C. Penney moved to Longmont, Colorado. Realizing that he may have a knack for it, and knowing that he definitely enjoyed it, he stayed in the retail business. He began working for a small chain if stores known as the Golden Rule Stores. After showing a strong work ethic and a general deportment as a mover and a shaker, James Cash Penney's bosses took notice. Success in one recognizes potential success in another and Guy Johnson and Thomas Callahan recognized L.C. Penney for all of his potential. They made him an offer that it turns out Penney couldn't refuse. They offered him a one-third partnership in the next Golden Rule store to open. J.C. Penney jumped at the chance to make his mark in the industry he was growing to love and would eventually help expand and rule.  Taking two thousand of his very own dollars, J.C. Penney invested with his former bosses and became their eager partner. He made the trek across the border and into Wyoming where he helped open a branch of the Golden Rule store in Kemmerer.  J.C. Penney opened two other stores and maintained his one third partnership with Johnson and Callahan until the two men aimed to dissolve their partnership. They did so in 1907 and when they did, Penney purchased full interest in all three stores.  Now the boss, he hired Earl C. Sams to be his manager and sales associate in his Kemmerer store.  Penney found he and Sams worked quite well together and so they partnered and aimed to open even more stores.  They opened a new location in Eureka, Utah.   Penney had opened 34 stores in the Rocky Mountains by the time 1912 rolled around.  In 1913, Penney made the executive decision to move his headquarters to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he could be closer to the train and expedite his business as a result to proximity of the supplies coming in from the east.  He also incorporated the business under a new name:  J.C. Penney Company.  By 1916, Penney and Sams headed east, toward unchartered Penney land and closer to the coast, where imported goods and materials made their way to the American shore.  During the 1920's, Penney shifted his focus toward the entire nation and my 1929 he had more than 1400 stores.  In 1917, Penney relinquished the day to day operating of the stores to the younger and more energetic Sams, but stayed on as chairman of the board until 1946.  When he grew to ill to function even in that capacity, Penney remained an honorary Chairman until his death in 1971.

Now headquartered in Plano TX, just outside of Dallas, JCPenney's are located in 49 states (all except Hawaii) and have come to be known as a mid-range chain of department stores.  What started out as a simple dry goods store has grown into the mega-empire that we know as JCPenney.  In addition to the over 1100 locations and JCPenney outlets, JCPenney also enjoys a healthy chunk of business by selling its merchandise via a mail order catalog as well as online sales through its website.  Some of the features of most of the JCPenney's retail locations include a JCPenney's portrait studio, a JC Penney's optical center, A JCPenney's salon, and JCPenney's furniture warehouse and studio.
