About Walmart

Walmart is a ubiquitous discount retailer, operating almost 12,000 stores throughout North America. The company also owns Sam's Club retail warehouses and has operations in the UK, China, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Canada. The company produces annual revenue in the neighborhood of $500 billion and is the country's largest grocery retailer.

Walmart was founded in 1962 by Sam Walton, an Arkansan businessman. Walton began his retail career when he started work on June 3, 1940. He was employed by JC Penney at one of their Des Moines, Iowa locations. He was a member of the service team for a year and a half, learning the ins and outs of customer service and how people like to be treated. He also kept his eyes out for sales trends and how store layout can affect what people buy and how much they are willing to spend on what they buy. By the time he met the Butler Brothers in 1945, the whiz kid Sam Walton had learned an awful lot about the inner workings of a retail business. The Butler Brothers were the owners of a regional retail chain that owned many stores under many names. The Butler Brothers offered one of those stores, a Ben Franklin, in a small town in Arkansas. With the chance not only to run his own store, but to be closer to home, Sam Walton jumped at the chance. He was massively successful. He turned all of his working knowledge of retail sales and customer service into a gold mine and realized some his store potential as a retail magnate. Walton was stymied, not by any flaw in his business practices but in the lease agreement of the store. When the lease was up, Walton could neither agree upon a new one for the existing store, nor could he settle on a location of another one. So he closed that store and took over another Ben Franklin in another location (Bentonville Arkansas) and called it Walton’s Five and Dime. (The original Walton’s Five and Dime in Bentonville, Arkansas is still there, operating today as a Walmart Visitor’s Center) Sam Walton found that the secret of his success at the Walton’s Five and Dime was to offer his customers the merchandise at a mark up rate slightly lower than that of his competitors. Knowing that penny pinching customers are always on the look for a deal, he incorporated a deal into every item of his Walton’s Five and Dime by not marking up his merchandise as much as other stores. On July 2, 1962, Sam Walton opened the first Walmart Discount City store in Rogers, Arkansas. He struck gold again as he knew he would. He followed up his huge success by expanding into 24 stores throughout Arkansas and he did it within five years of opening his Rogers, Arkansas store. Sam Walton’s company, growing and successful, reached $12.6 million in sales and in 1968, he expanded his empire beyond the borders of Arkansas, opening stores in Sikeston, Missouri and Claremore, Oklahoma. The opening of these stores turned out to be the first steps toward a global marketplace. Walmart locations began to spring up all over the country, and then the world.

The Walmart Supercenters are the newest wave and gaining popularity as the American consumer leans towards one stop shopping to fulfill all of his or her needs. The supercenters stock everything that the discount centers do, but in addition the Supercenters offer a full scale grocery store included meat, poultry, dairy, produce, and fresh seafood. Not only do the Walmart Supercenters offer groceries, most also include pet shops, pharmacies, car care centers, hair and nail salons, video rental stores, and even fast food chains such as McDonald’s and Subway.

The Walmart Neighborhood Market are more like grocery stores offering full lines of groceries and sundries, drug store needs, health and beauty products, photo developing services, and a limited selection of general merchandise. The groceries are definitely the bread and butter, so to speak, of the Walmart Neighborhood Market. They are used to fill the gap between the Discount Stores and the Supercenters.
